I saw this production of David and Bat Sheva a few months ago and thought it was quite special. I have to disclose two facts: I love Flamenco, and my sister is a dancer on the Israeli Flamenco company – Compas. On the one hand I may sound biased while on the other it just means that I’ve seen a lot of Flamenco in my life. I like some productions, others I like less. David and Bat Sheva is one I can recommend whole heartedly. Even if dance is not particularly your thing or even if Flamenco doesn’t get you excited, this show will put a smile on your face. Flamenco music mixed with chanting of biblical phrases, modern dance and contemporary Flamenco give new interpretation to a well known story of love, passion, power, sin, death…. A good old fashioned biblical drama.

This original production offers a personal, artistic interpretation to the well know plot of David’s last after Bat-Sheva and David’s gangster-like behavior in sending Bat Sheva’s husband, Uriya, to die in war. Choreographer, Michal Natan, who dance the part of Bat Sheva (and is the artistic manager of the company) – brings the story to life in its full colors and emotions.

Also participating in the production is Arik Alfassi, a neo-classical dancer, formerly lead male dancer for Bat Dor Dance Company. Bat sheva (Natan) and David (Alfassi), are joined by the rest of the company in some of my favorite parts of the show. In three words: Go and See!!!

The Daviv and Bat Sheva production will be on stage at the Suzaane Dellal Center, in Tel Aviv, on June 28. If you want to see Compas – The Israeli Flamenco Dance Company before that or after, in different shows, check out Compas English web site for tours, info and photos.
